An Over-fifty Interpretation

I was inspired for my outfit today from Lucky Magazine.  Oh, I know what some of you are saying, it's cheating or that's copying or that's not creative.  Well, for those of us over fifty--it IS creative, because we must adapt what the 20 year old model is wearing to us.  And let me tell you, it's not easy.

This look was called skirts and sneakers but what I liked MOST is the striped shirt and the flowey skirt.  The instructions were to have a mini, flowey, bright colored skirt, large striped top, and sneakers that aren't too athletic.

I opted out of the sneakers as I was going to work--but I could do that another time.  I wore sandals to further the casual look.  The shirt was a bit TOO oversize, so I tied it with a ring.  The skirt was the flowey type but not as short as the model's (as much as you know I like  minis).  My skirt isn't as bright either, but I think it works.

Do we have a successful over-fifty interpretation of a look or what?

  1. I think this works....being creative is about working with what you've got, right? The short skirts look really great on you! And I'm with you, I'd have chosen the sandals over tennies too! Hugs to you girly! ~Serene

  2. I think your interpretation works very well! Though I love my sneakers, I think the sandals are a better choice here. Nicely done!

  4. You look fabulous, as usual. I love the color of your sandals -- they look great with the skirt.

  5. I can see your knee in that skirt so it's not all that matronly!

I like the stripes with the circles and the not quite so high contrast skirt. The red skirt in the magazine didn't really attract me that much anyway.

I'm good with tying the hem of the shirt. I might also have folded the sleeves up to add a little more fit to the top.

  7. Tying up a shirt with a ring is a new one for me; that in and of itself is creative. Your outfit is perfect with the background.

  11. I love this easygoing style! And I don't think it's cheating at all, you've adapted it and made it very much your own :)

The skirt sort of reminds me of a Franz Kline painting!

  12. I love the print mixing here and in your inspiration. The Lucky look is cute with the sneakers, but my legs would look quite stumpy in short skirt and sneaks.. !

  13. Serene~and working what you've got in your closet! I do have some cute sneakers that'll work too!
Une femme~For work anyway..there are a lot cute sneakers out there this year tho...
Patti~I like the mixed pattern thing, even if it is only a passing fad, it extends your wardrobe. Go for it! and my gardens are overgrown.....
Susan~~I got these sandals at Zara's last year, they are cotton and so comfortable! They are getting worn looking tho...
Rose~Great suggestion about the sleeves! I think that'll look great too!
Thanks Terri~I'd love to find these sandals again...very comfortable!
Judith~The ring is a honking big one too--a piece in itself.
Ofelia~There are the little adjustments that make it more me.
Jill~I know, huh? I have been sketching--lets see if I can post some of them...
Kari~I will need to get rid of these sandals soon--they are getting really dirty.
Ariel~You are so good--I often think of you now when I see a print because you can immediatly relate an artist...it would take me to do research! Thanks!
Vanessa~Really? C'mon, you break the rules all the time! It would probably look better than you think....

  14. I know I'm in the minority here but I did not like this particular look on you. Two reasons:

I rarely if ever see women use a ring to make a shirt smaller. I thought well fitting clothes is what we over50's need to shoot for.

Second, the color of the skirt was wrong. Two many blues. The reason it worked in the Lucky picture was because of the contrast between the red/orange and the stripes. Also her print was smaller.

Details I know, but important ones. You want to look modern, not crazy :-)

  15. You look so cute! And you are right.... you copied a 20 yr old!!! GOOD JOB! I love the sandals - adorable. I think it is totally cool to copy a celeb or cool street look. I do it ALL THE TIME! As a matter of fact, I am going to do that tomorrow. I can't remember where I got the pic, but it is some cool street style! Thanks for being so young and keeping the rest of us "of a certain age" young. Hugs and Cheers!
