Fit In or Stand Out?

As you know, I am a fan of Lucky Magazine. I love it because it keeps the fashions attainable--with price point and purpose. They are stylish but not high fashion. Unfortunately, most of the styles are geared for younger people, so I really look to it for inspiration, then edit for my age.

That being said, what I loved about this issue, is how they juxtaposed the minimal look with "eclectic glamour" in their feature article. The editor called it "more or less". It reminded me of this; that Americans dress to blend in and Europeans dress to stand out.

You know I am the latter group and with that I would advise anyone who would ask me about style~

So who are you?

  1. I think I'm somewhere in between. I'm trying to learn to stand out more, but I'm not comfortable standing out too much. I also need a wardrobe that's practical and cost-efficient, so I'm always looking for things that will stand out -- just a little bit -- while also blending with what I have.

  2. For me it depends on where I'm going and the mood I'm in. I remember a few years back my only New Year's resolution was to wear less black. (took me all year to lose that crutch!)

  3. I'm trying to embrace cclor--with results. My habitual colors for decades have been grey and black. The move into color has brought compliments!

  4. to Teri and Lisa, About the color thing, I remember shopping with my mom, and it was always about what COLOR looked good on you...I now see that the right color can really bring out someone's looks and complexion. Not evrey one looks GREAT in black or grey; I'm glad to see both of you trying to break out of the color doldrums. It can be empowering!

Frumpfactor~In between is good! I think us over 50's almost need to be in between now. I just can't do what my father used to call my "get-ups" anymore (meaning wilder outfits); I'd look like a crazy lady! So in-between is GOOD!

  5. Thanks for coming by Cloud of Secrets. Sorry I had to be the one to break the news about Lucky's change of management! I hope everything will be just fine and that we won't see much change in the print publication -- just more digital options for those who're interested in foruming, ecommerce, whatever.

I looooved the back-to-back Minimalism and Eclectic editorials, too. They really drummed into me how much trouble I've had choosing an appropriate style for myself, though -- I was drooling over both stories. I think Minimalism's shapes and simplicity work best for my life, but I wonder if I could do Minimalism in plush Eclectic colors and fabrics rather than grey, beige, and black.

  6. I hear you on the color thing with the minimilism--actually, I think Lucky had done something on sort of dressing up the minimal thing with color! Lots of fans with the minimal look--especially at my age.

I wonder if that cute little drawing will be at then end of Lucky Mag now....

    Thanks for commenting, Cloud!
