Time to Prepare for Bikini Season

Bathing Beauties 1925
My Zumba class is mobbed.  Yes, the dreaded bikini season is around the corner.  And while I am well past being able to wear a bikini, I still shudder at the thought of trying on a bathing suit.  Are we all together on that?

I saw this picture the other day on Pinterest, and I commented that I'd sort of like to go back to this look, lol.  But when I really looked at this picture, I thought, hmmm, these suits are sort-of cute, no?

I mean, take away the wool jersey knit for material, and it's almost like a tunic with biker shorts. (although for this publicity picture, they hiked up the shorts a bit) Add a good bra and whala!  Not a bad bathing suit style for for the retired baby boomer!

And the more I researched, I found quite a few cute suits from the 1920's.  Modest yet figure flattering, if used with a modern fabric.

How cute is this bathing dress?

A lot of my friends don't even WEAR bathing suits anymore.  And I am curious; what kind of bathing suit would YOU, my bathing friends over a certain age, like to wear?  Please answer the poll on my sidebar and comment in as much detail as you wish~

And I will be saying a big Hello to Patti and all of my friends over at Visible Monday!

  1. I buy the Miraclesuit because it is basically like attractive shape wear. I like to purchase a coordinating coverup and add some nice sandals and am ready for any pool or beach.

  5. I do wear a bathing suit. My current one is not too dissimilar from the ones above. It's one piece with cycle-short like bottom half down to mid-thigh and sleeveless top half with a front zip. I call it my Channel swimmer suit. LOOOVE it, no worries.

  6. I am one of those who doesn't wear a bathing suit...haven't had one on in years. I guess if I had access to a pool for exercise I would change that. I need to firm this flabby body but not for swim wear!!

  7. I have loved these 1920's suits forever! I would definitely wear one, in a modern quick-dry fabric. Right now I only do board shorts and a surfer's "rash guard" tee. Not very feminine, I admit : > Thanks for linking up!

  8. Oh YES! Let's ditch the wool jersey and bring this look back! Even the last look with the gauntlets and... are those lace leg warmers?

I made some suits somewhat similar in that nylon/spandex bubble knit so popular in the 80s. Boy shorts and a longer length top. Alas, the spandex wore out. And now I'm unsymmetrical up top. I have a top in mind that's based on bias patches. It's been percolating for years. Someday...

  9. Love these photos! Oh how far we've come...
I'm gonna be honest....I still do wear bikinis IF we're on a deserted beach! haha. I know I'm too old, but I just don't like the one piece tan line. Kudos to those women who wear what they like no matter what.

  10. I bought my swimsuit as separates, so I was able to get what I want and a good fit. The top covers my abdomen, and the bottom has a little skirt that affords me a little modesty. I've never had firm thighs, and now I just don't care anymore. If I want to swim, I'm going to swim!

    1. I love the little skirt thing too! I usually buy a one piece then add a skirt as the top of my thighs arent firm either! Thanks for your input!

  11. Here I'm seeing my kind of style! I'm just getting started out here in Bohemian BlogLand and I'm totally loving yours!
I've always adored the vintage bathing suits...why can't we get modern ones of the same sort? Lord knows that the designers do wild things with clothing these days...why not put some of that historial and demure sensibility back for us mature gals? I usually wear a rashguard and swim short when I go snorkeling...then put on a little skirt, a paero, or a tunic asap.
Looking forward to becomming a fan!

  12. I have not worn a bathing suit in many years, but the last one I had that I purchased about 15 years or so ago was a black one piece with good upper support bra and a moderate cut thigh...not too high, but not too low.. I liked it and just recently got rid of it since I knew I'd never in this lifetime ever put it on again. lol

  13. Please don't tell me the age to stop wearing a bikini. I'm seventy this year and refuse to listen. Can't imagine not wearing the least possible and slipping into the sea. I would LOVE a twenties bathing suit, although I don't think that they really flatter, unless you are very gamin. (Not that that would stop me!)

    1. So glad to hear you are still wearing a bikini!
I think the reason why the 20's bathing suits were so revealing was the fabric; it was a WOOL KNIT! Im thinking of making a prototype of this style--maybe it wont be flattering--we shall see!

  15. My last bathing suit was so un-used the elastic dry-rotted. I don't swim and spend no time sun-bathing so I never replaced it.

  16. Thanks for commenting tho! I want to have an idea of how many people NEED this article of clothing! And would like to see it adapted to OUR figures.

  17. Hello Paula,
Mostly I'm wearing bikinis, but for sportive swimming I prefer a swim suit. I'm looking for a vintage black wrapped swim suit for along time now. But whenever I found one it was too small for me. The ladies formerly were more elfish :-)
Thank you for visiting my blog.

  18. Fun article, love those pictures. I have to add my name to the women who still wear bikini's (well at least two-piece swim suits). Last year I invested in two lovely one piece suits that are so fun and flattering, but I'm still getting use to them. I keep telling myself I'm way over the age for two-piece suits but with a pool in my back yard and a house boat on Lake Powel, I just think, "what the heck" (and we work way too hard at the gym not to enjoy them once in a while).

  19. I have one slinky black suit that still fits, but haven't had occasion to wear it in years. SOOOOOOO glad to have this worry behind me! No beach for hundreds of miles, no vacations in the foreseeable future, but at least I don't have to worry about this fashion issue.
Life is good, now that I consider this issue!

  20. I don't think I've worn a bathing suit during this century! I can't swim so I really don't need to wear one but wouldn't wear one even if I could swim. I've seen that famous picture of Helen Mirren wearing a two piece suit in her 60's. She looked fabulous so it really should be about personal comfort rather than about a number.

I LOVE that last picture. Is she adorable or what?

  21. Not only do I have and wear a bathing suit (a skirted tankini and a regular tank) but so does my 80 y/o mother! We go to the beach. I moved to a beach state as an adult and it took me a few years to realize that folks who grew up wearing bikinis to the beach continue to wear them, even as adults - often with little regard as to whether they're bean-poles anymore. Once you're there nobody cares what you look like. The important thing is to get there.

These days I do try to protect myself from excessive sun so I'll usually have some kind of top and a big hat. Right now I'm shopping for a pair of nylon capris for early morning walks. If you're going to wear something besides a suit to get wet it's better if it dries quickly. My fashion advice is: if you don't want to wear a suit go with clothing that's made to get wet. No cotton garmets that stay damp and cling afterwards.

  22. I've so enjoyed reading all the comments on this posting, Paula. I'm with Veshoevius on this one! My first swimsuit (post war economy!) was knitted from random-coloured remnants of wool. It sank almost to my knees when wet and was not a pretty sight!

  23. Hi Paula!

I'm ok with a bathing suit, don't wear the bikini of course but 2 pieces
I found a style i like, the bottom is like a cute mini skirt
I like the 20's bathing suits, they are like you say very cute

  24. Bathing dress with fingerless gloves. What could be better? I haven't worn a bathing suit in years, so haven't thought about it much. But it could happen, and it would be a one piece.
